What exactly is Pilates?"Contrology (Pilates) is complete control of body, mind and spirit." Joseph Pilates. Pilates comes in many shapes and forms ranging from classes that focus on the original 34 exercises from Joseph Pilates and stick as closely as possible to his work, to more contemporary styles which incorporate modern research and biomechanics. There are slow classes, fast classes, general workout classes or other classes that will focus on strength, mobility or flexibility, or a particular body area. Ultimately though, all Pilates classes are based on the same fundamental principles which focus on correct breathing, core connection and centring, and require concentration, precision and flow to be applied throughout. There is no 'right' or 'wrong' style, and we encourage you to try as many different styles, classes and instructors as you can. Each one brings it's own unique and special elements that you can benefit and learn from. Ultimately, Pilates should help you create a happy, healthy body and sense of wellbeing that will benefit your everyday life.

What is the difference between Pilates and yoga?Through the practice of both yoga and Pilates you will experience many benefits. While there are some similarities between the two, the background and focus of each is somewhat different. Both will improve your balance, flexibility and strength, as well as increasing your mind-body awareness and control. Both have a strong focus on breathing and are great for stress-relief. In terms of their origins, one is a holistic discipline originating from ancient India, the other a specific physical system devised by a German anatomist called Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. Yoga incorporates more spirituality and meditation and can incorporate elements of philosopy, science and an ethical way of living. Pilates originated with 34 exercises, largely focused on core strengthening and can incorporate various small and large equipment and machines which allow numerous modifications for different conditions and rehabilitation requirements.

How many Pilates classes should I do per week?Pilates is not just a workout, it's a way of life which can improve your general form, function, health and wellbing. It is through regular practice that you will become more in tune with your mind-body connection and able to experience flow-on benefits through the breathing, alignment and core control that you learn in Pilates. For most people we'd recommend a couple of classes per week, to begin to learn and master the skills that can be taken back and applied in your everyday life. Spruce it up with a bit of variety in your routine and throw in a Reformer, a Mat and a Barre class, all very different but all based on the same fundamental Pilates skills.

What should I wear to Pilates class?Wear clothing that is comfortable that allows freedom of movement but is loose enough to allow your instructor to easily observe your posture and body alignment throughout the exercises. Men often will wear shorts with skins or bike pants underneath. For hygiene purposes, Pilates grip socks must be worn when doing Reformer classes and are optional in Matwork. If desired, there are a range of Pilates socks available for purchase from The Pilates Studios at Wellness on William.
